5 Typing Exercises That Took Me from Slow to Super Fast – My Life Experience

Beginning of my keyboard typing story, let’s move on, I used to type like I was scared of the keyboard.

2. Fixing My Weak Keys

I didn’t even realize I had “problem keys” until I started tracking where I made the most mistakes. For me, it was symbols and punctuation – especially things like “;” or “{}” when typing text for blogging.

I started using Keybr.com, which lets me practice just the letters or combinations you struggle with most. I also made little sticky notes for myself like reminding my left pinky where “A” lives.

This kind of focused practice helps me to accelerate my typing keyboard. Within a week, those clumsy keys stopped slowing me down.

3. Copy-Typing Articles I Liked Reading

This one was a game changer. I’d find an article, blog post, or short story I enjoyed, and I’d literally retype it word for word.

Not only did this help me with speed and flow, but it also improved my writing and grammar subconsciously. I paid attention to how sentences were formed, where punctuation was placed, and how paragraphs flowed all while practicing typing.

It felt productive and relaxing at the same time. So, I picked up some cool vocabulary while I was at it.

4. Typing From Memory

At first, I thought this would be too hard, but it turned out to be one of the best brain exercises I could’ve done.

I’d watch a short video, pause it, and try to type out what was said from memory. Or sometimes, I’d just look away from a quote and try to retype it as I remembered it.

This forced me to type more naturally, like I was thinking through my fingers. It also improved my ability to write from thought, which helped a lot when blogging.

5. Tracking My Progress Like a Game

I made it fun. Each week, I’d take a typing test on 10FastFingers and record my speed and accuracy. I didn’t obsess over it, but I just wanted to see slow, steady improvement. And what I did.

Seeing myself go from 35 to 50, then 60, then 75 WPM gave me such a motivation. It reminded me that even small, daily habits can lead to real, visible progress.

Make a simple note or spreadsheet with your weekly scores. Celebrate your milestones, even if it’s just +2 WPM.

What Changed for Me?

Typing isn’t something most people think of as a “life skill,” but for me, it kind of became one.

  • I reply to message chatting faster.
  • Writing blog posts (like this one) feels smooth instead of stressful.
  • I make way fewer mistakes.
  • And weirdly enough, I feel more confident in everything I do on a computer.
  • My fingers are automatically taking their own positions.

This whole journey took just a few weeks of commitment with no cost, no gimmicks, but just consistent, simple practice.
